Carpații Occidentali (the Western Carpathians, sometimes called the Romanian Western Carpathians to distinguish them from the separate Western Carpathians of Slovakia) form the westernmost section of the Romanian Carpathian arc. They sit west of the Transylvanian Depression, which forms their eastern boundary, and stretch roughly between the Danube in the south, the Someș River in the north, and the Barcău River in the northwest.
Their name comes purely from geographic position: they lie to the west (occidental) of the Transylvanian basin, in contrast to Carpații Orientali (east) and Carpații Meridionali (south).
The single highest point in Carpații Occidentali is Vârful Curcubăta Mare, 1,849 m, in the Bihor massif of the Apuseni Mountains. This makes the Western Carpathians the lowest of the three traditional Romanian Carpathian branches by maximum altitude, though what they lack in height they make up for in geological variety and karst scenery.
If one word describes Carpații Occidentali, it is discontinuous. Unlike the more continuous ridgelines of the Eastern and Southern Carpathians, this section breaks apart into separate mountain blocks, divided by wide river corridors and by “gulf depressions,” low-lying areas where the surrounding plain or hill country pushes deep into the mountain mass.
This fragmentation happened during the same Alpine orogeny that raised the rest of the Carpathians, but the western sector also underwent later collapses and block faulting, which is why the once-continuous connection between the Apuseni Mountains and Carpații Orientali was broken.
The geology is often described as a petrographic mosaic: crystalline schists, granites, volcanic rock (notably in the southern Apuseni), limestone, and flysch sedimentary rock all appear across the region, sometimes within a few kilometers of each other. This mix is the reason Carpații Occidentali contain Romania’s densest concentration of karst landscape: caves, gorges, sinkholes, underground rivers, and karst springs.
Because the terrain is gentler and more broken up than the Southern or Eastern Carpathians, Carpații Occidentali also hold the largest number of mountain settlements in the Romanian Carpathians, with villages found up to about 1,600 m.
Carpații Occidentali are traditionally divided into three major groups, arranged from north to south:

Munții Apuseni are the largest, highest, and most visited group in Carpații Occidentali. They are bounded by the Barcău River to the north, the Mureș River to the south, the Western Hills and Plain to the west, and the Transylvanian Depression to the east.
Within Munții Apuseni, geographers further distinguish crystalline-limestone massifs (the Bihor Mountains) from volcanic massifs (the Metaliferi and Vlădeasa mountains). This split explains why the Apuseni are simultaneously Romania’s best caving destination and a historic mining region: the limestone areas produced the caves, and the volcanic and mineralized zones produced centuries of gold, silver, and copper mining around towns like Roșia Montană and Brad.
The Apuseni Mountains hold over 400 recorded caves, including three of Romania’s most visited: Peștera Urșilor (Bears’ Cave), Peștera Scărișoara (home to one of Europe’s largest underground glaciers), and Peștera Vântului (the longest cave system in Romania). The Padiș plateau, inside Apuseni Nature Park, is the best-known hub for this karst scenery, with sinkholes, natural stone bridges, and the Cetățile Ponorului gorge system.
Munții Poiana Ruscă form the central, connecting group of Carpații Occidentali, sitting south of the Mureș and acting as a geographic bridge between the Apuseni Mountains to the north and the Banat Mountains to the south. They are made up mostly of crystalline schist and reach a modest maximum height of around 1,374 to 1,382 m at Vârful Padeș, depending on the source consulted.
Compared to the Apuseni and Banat groups, Poiana Ruscă is quieter and less visited, with rounded, forested ridgelines rather than dramatic peaks or extensive karst. The group is historically significant for iron ore and other metal deposits, which supported local mining and metallurgy for centuries.
Munții Banatului occupy the southwestern corner of Romania, bordered by the Danube to the south, the Timiș-Cerna corridor to the east, and the Timiș Valley and Western Plain to the north and west. This group forms the Danube’s famous Iron Gates gorge (Defileul Dunării), one of the longest and most scenic river gorges in Europe, cut between Băzias and Orșova.
The Banat Mountains split into five recognized sub-groups, described in more detail below: Munții Semenic, Munții Aninei, Munții Almăjului, Munții Locvei, and Munții Dognecei. Elevation generally decreases from east to west across this group. Like the Apuseni, the Banat Mountains, especially the limestone Anina Mountains, are rich in karst features: Cheile Nerei, Cheile Carașului, and Cheile Minișului are among the best-known gorges, alongside show caves such as Peștera Comarnic and waterfalls like Bigăr.
