Complete Guide to the Central Group of the Eastern Carpathians

What are Carpații Moldo-Transilvani?

Carpații Moldo-Transilvani (the Moldavian-Transylvanian Carpathians) form the central group of Carpații Orientali. They are bounded to the north by the Dornelor depression, the Mestecăniș pass, and the Moldova valley corridor, which mark the boundary with the northern group, and to the south by the Brașov depression and the Oituz pass, where the range meets Carpații de Curbură.

Ridgelines here run predominantly northwest to southeast, arranged in three parallel strips according to rock type, the same structural pattern that defines Carpații Orientali as a whole, but expressed here with more variety than anywhere else in the Eastern Carpathians. The group is cut through by two major transverse valleys, the Mureș and the Olt, along with longitudinal valleys and several large intramontane depressions: Giurgeu on the Mureș, Ciuc on the Olt, and Comănești on the Trotuș.

A note on Perșani, Baraolt, and Bodoc

Some sources, including certain Wikipedia listings, group Munții Perșani, Munții Baraolt, and Munții Bodoc under Carpații Moldo-Transilvani. Having examined this in detail in the previous article on Carpații de Curbură, this series places these three massifs within Carpații de Curbură instead, as the internal curvature mountains reaching into the Brașov depression. The cross-listing itself is a real feature of Romanian geographic literature rather than an error on either side, and it is worth knowing both classifications exist if you encounter this group described differently elsewhere.

The three strips of the central group

  • Volcanic rock (basalt and andesite) in the west: Munții Călimani, Munții Gurghiu, and Munții Harghita, the southern continuation of the volcanic chain that begins further north in Oaș, Gutâi, and Țibleș.
  • Crystalline schist in the center, opening with the twin massifs of Giumalău and Rarău, distinguished by scenic limestone margins, and continuing through Munții Bistriței, Munții Giurgeu, Munții Hășmașu Mare, Munții Ciucului, and Munții Nemira, several of which also contain patches of limestone or conglomerate.
  • Folded sedimentary rock, or flysch, in the east, arranged in two rows: an inner row of Munții Bistriței, Munții Ceahlău, and Munții Tarcău, and an outer row of Munții Stânișoarei, Munții Goșmanu, and Munții Berzunți.

Munții Călimani

The largest volcanic massif in the group and home to the highest volcanic peak in Romania, Vârful Pietrosu at 2,100 m. Călimani preserves an unusually well-formed crater landscape, including an abandoned sulfur quarry at Gura Haitii and the conglomerate rock formations known as the 12 Apostoli. Some sources also describe limited glacial traces here, cirques and moraines, though the far more extensive and universally recognized glacial landscape in Carpații Orientali remains the one in the Rodna Mountains, covered in the previous article in this series.

Munții Gurghiu and Munții Harghita

The volcanic chain’s southern continuation. Munții Harghita includes Muntele Ciomatu, the easternmost and youngest volcano in the chain, home to Lacul Sfânta Ana, the only crater lake in Romania, and the nearby spa town of Băile Tușnad.

Munții Giumalău and Munții Rarău

A picturesque pair of crystalline massifs known for their limestone margins, most famously the Pietrele Doamnei rock formations on Rarău, a landmark shared informally with the neighboring northern group, since it sits close to the Obcina Mestecăniș boundary.

Munții Giurgeu and Munții Hășmașu Mare

Two massifs with well-developed karst relief. Munții Hășmașu Mare is the source of the Olt River and contains the Cheile Bicazului, Cheile Bicăjelului, and Cheile Șugăului gorges, together protected as Cheile Bicazului-Hășmaș National Park, alongside Lacul Roșu, a natural dam lake formed by a landslide. Munții Giurgeu also shows karst features, including the Piatra Singuratică rock tower, and frames the Giurgeu depression and the spa town of Borsec.

Munții Ceahlău

One of the most recognizable single massifs in Romania, made of flysch and conglomerate, reaching 1,907 m at Vârful Toaca. Its Pietrele Dochiei rock formation and the Cheile Bicazului gorge on its southern edge are protected within Ceahlău National Park.

The outer flysch ridges: Tarcău, Stânișoarei, Goșmanu, and Berzunți

Lower, more forested, and less visited than the volcanic and crystalline strips, these ridges mark the transition from the Eastern Carpathians toward the Moldavian Plateau and the Subcarpathians of Moldavia.

Depressions, passes, and rivers

Major depressions: Depresiunea Giurgeu, on the Mureș; Depresiunea Ciucului, on the Olt; Depresiunea Comănești, on the Trotuș; along with the smaller Depresiunea Bilbor, Depresiunea Borsec, Depresiunea Vărșag, and Depresiunea Cașin.

Major passes and gorge-crossings: Pasul Tihuța, Pasul Mestecăniș, Pasul Ghimeș, Pasul Oituz, Pasul Bicaz, Pasul Tulgheș, Pasul Bucin, and Pasul Șicaș, along with two notable river gorges used as transport corridors, the Toplița-Deda gorge on the Mureș and the Tușnad gorge on the Olt.

Resources and settlement

The group has historically supported sulfur mining in Călimani, copper mining at Bălan, iron ore at Lueta, and lignite and oil extraction in the Comănești depression, alongside quarrying of basalt, andesite, limestone, and marble. Large reservoirs, including Izvorul Muntelui on the Bistrița River near Ceahlău and Poiana Uzului on the Trotuș, support both hydroelectric power and recreation. Settlement concentrates in the intramontane depressions, with spa towns including Borsec, Băile Tușnad, and Bălan drawing on the region’s mineral springs and post-volcanic activity.

Carpații Moldo-Transilvani may be the single most varied hiking region in the Eastern Carpathians, since nearly every terrain type in the section appears here:
