This is part of a larger series on the mountains of Romania. It follows on from Carpații Orientali (the Eastern Carpathians), which introduced the northern and central groups of the Eastern Carpathians.
Carpații Maramureșului și Bucovinei (the Maramureș and Bucovina Carpathians) form the northern group of Carpații Orientali, stretching from the border with Ukraine in the north down to the Dornelor depression, the Mestecăniș pass, and the Moldova valley corridor in the south, which mark the boundary with the central group. To the west they border the Transylvanian Depression, and in the far north the Tisa River forms a short natural border with Ukraine.
Like the rest of the Eastern Carpathians, this is young, folded mountain terrain formed during the Alpine orogeny. The highest point in the group, and in all of Carpații Orientali, is Vârful Pietrosul Rodnei, 2,303 m, in the Rodna Mountains. This is also the only place in the entire Eastern Carpathians where true glacial relief survives: cirques and glacial lakes carved during the last glaciation.

The highest and most significant sub-group, protected as Rodna Mountains National Park and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This is the only part of the entire Eastern Carpathians with preserved glacial cirques and lakes, including Lacul Lala and Lacul Buhăiescu. The southern slope also holds Peștera Izvorul Tăușoarelor, the deepest cave in Romania. The Borșa tourist complex, in the Maramureș depression at the foot of the range, is the main access point and ski area for the group.
Two remote, crystalline-schist massifs that see far fewer visitors than Rodnei despite similar elevations. Munții Maramureșului forms part of the natural border area near Ukraine, while Munții Suhard connects Rodnei to the volcanic Țibleș massif and the Bârgău Mountains further south.
These four massifs form the northern end of Romania’s longest volcanic chain, and were historically mined for copper, lead, zinc, gold, and silver, particularly around Baia Mare, Baia Sprie, and Cavnic. The area remains one of Romania’s most significant historic non-ferrous mining regions.
Munții Bârgăului, made of flysch pierced by eruptive rock, links the crystalline core of the group to Obcinele Bucovinei, a series of long, parallel, gently rounded flysch ridges running toward the Moldavian Plateau. These ridges include Obcina Mare, Obcina Feredeului, and Obcina Mestecăniș, the last built unusually from crystalline schist rather than flysch, along with smaller named ridges such as Obcina Brodinei. Munții Bârgăului is also known in popular culture through the Tihuța Pass, sometimes marketed to tourists under the name “Dracula’s Pass,” referencing Bram Stoker’s novel.

The region has a notably dense river network. Someșul Mare, Bistrița, Vișeu, and Iza all originate in the Rodna Mountains, while Suceava and Moldova rise in Obcinele Bucovinei, and the Tur flows from the volcanic massifs. In Depresiunea Maramureșului, former salt mines have flooded to form the salt lakes of Ocna Șugatag and Costiui.
