Carpații de Curbură (the Curvature Carpathians) are, administratively, the southern group of Carpații Orientali. As explained in the overview article that opened this series, they are distinctive enough in shape, geology, and hiking character that this series treats them as a fourth, separate section of the Romanian Carpathians, alongside Carpații Occidentali, Carpații Orientali, and Carpații Meridionali.
The name comes from what happens here geographically: this is where the Romanian Carpathian arc makes its sharpest bend, turning from the roughly north-south orientation of the Eastern Carpathians into the roughly east-west orientation of the Southern Carpathians. The section runs between the Oituz Valley in the north, where it meets the central group of Carpații Orientali, and the Prahova Valley in the south, where it meets Carpații Meridionali, making it a direct geographic bridge between the two.
The highest point in Carpații de Curbură is Vârful Ciucaș, 1,954 m, in the Ciucaș massif.
Where Carpații Occidentali are defined by karst and Carpații Meridionali by crystalline schist, Carpații de Curbură are defined almost entirely by flysch: layered sedimentary rock made of marls, marl-limestones, conglomerates, and calcareous sandstones, reaching a maximum width of about 80 km through this section, the widest flysch zone anywhere in the Romanian Carpathians.
Two distinct flysch types appear here. Cretaceous flysch dominates the western part of the section, in the Baraolt, Bodoc, Baiu, and Ciucaș mountains, made of the so-called Sinaia strata. Folded, faulted, and tectonically uplifted, this flysch produces distinctive structural landforms called cuestas, asymmetric ridges with one steep and one gentle slope, most visible in Ciucaș, Piatra Mare, and Postăvarul. Further east, an older, Paleogene flysch appears in the Vrancea and Buzău mountains, containing quartz-rich sandstones that resist erosion well and give these ranges their height and ruggedness.
Formation here continued later than almost anywhere else in the Romanian Carpathians, beginning in the Cretaceous and carrying on into the Neogene. Carpații de Curbură are, in a real sense, still forming today: the bend in the range sits directly above the Vrancea seismic zone, one of the most seismically active regions in Europe. Unusually, Vrancea earthquakes originate at intermediate depths, often over 100 km down, and have historically produced some of the strongest and most widely felt earthquakes in Romania.
The previous article in this series flagged that Munții Perșani, Munții Baraolt, and Munții Bodoc appear in some sources as part of the central group of Carpații Orientali (Carpații Moldo-Transilvani) and in others as part of Carpații de Curbură. Having looked at this more closely, the more common and more geographically consistent placement treats all three as part of Carpații de Curbură, specifically as the internal curvature massifs: digit-shaped ranges that reach directly into the Brașov depression from the north. Munții Perșani stands out for having a genuinely three-part petrography of its own, with volcanic rock in the north, flysch limestone in the center, and crystalline schist in the south, which likely explains why different sources have classified it differently. This article treats Perșani, Baraolt, and Bodoc as part of Carpații de Curbură.
Carpații de Curbură are usually split into two structural sub-categories, plus the large depression at their center.

Munții Nemira, on the boundary with the central group of Carpații Orientali, is also sometimes grouped with the curvature massifs given its position directly north of the Brașov depression system, though it is more commonly classed with the central group, as covered in the previous article in this series.
At the structural center of Carpații de Curbură sits Depresiunea Brașov, the largest intramontane depression in Romania. It formed through tectonic subsidence rather than erosion, and presents a flat, open, plain-like landscape at around 500 m elevation, historically known as Țara Bârsei (the Burzenland), long used for agriculture.
The depression is bordered by Munții Perșani, Munții Baraolt, Munții Bodoc, and Munții Nemira to the north, Munții Întorsurii and Munții Bârsei to the south, Munții Brețcu to the east, and Măgura Codlei to the west. It is drained by the Olt River, which collects the Râul Negru, Timiș, and Bârsa rivers within the depression. Depresiunea Brașov connects outward through several of the section’s main passes, most notably toward Depresiunea Ciucului via the Tușnad pass to the north.
